Gut-Soothing, (Organic) Red Cabbage Juice

I'm sure juicing organic, red cabbage isn't the first type of product to cross your mind!

Organic red cabbage is an nutrient-dense 'superfood' for the gut!

Red cabbage is a plant-based source of (amino acid) L-Glutamine, one of the building blocks of protein chains in the body.

The amino acid L-Glutamine(1):

  • Is the most abundant amino acid freely circulating in the human body that is used by the intestinal tract cell lining
  • Supports the rapid development of new cells found along the small and large intestinal wall
  • Regulates the 'tight junction proteins' found between the cells of the intestinal wall, supporting gut barrier integrity
  • Supports the reduction of cell signalling involved in pro-inflammatory pathways in the body
  • Provides protection against cell death and stressors to our cells as a result of day-to-day bodily activities and inflammatory exposures

Why Organic Produce?

Organic produce contains far less pesticide/herbicide residues, alongside considering the fact that by juicing and extracting all fiber from the produce, we are concentrating the nutrients for rapid absorption and utilization by the body. Therefore, we want to reduce the toxic load, in particular.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 head (organic) red cabbage
  • 2 medium-sized (organic) carrots
  • 1 small, (organic) red apple
  • 1 small chunk of (organic) ginger root
  • 1-2 tbsp. (organic) lemon juice (or 1/2 an organic lemon)

*Yield = approx. 2 cups, depending on size of produce

*Can play around with the relative proportions here, such as 1/2 the volume of of apple, etc.

JUICING TIPS:

  • Mix up the order of produce as you put it into your juicer (sandwiching pieces of produce that don't contain as much water between those that do
  • If not using 1/2 a lemon, I like to pour 1-2 tbsp. of lemon juice through the juicer at the end (of a touch of filtered water), to rinse the machine and ensure all pieces of produce have been fully pressed through
  • This juice is an exceptional colour! Be aware that it can easily stain! ;)

I really hope you'll try this one out! Enjoy!
