Autoimmune-Friendly International Travel Tips!

If you're doing any international plane travel this summer, or any sort of plane travel with changing time zones that impact your circadian rhythm (and where your Immune System can take a hit!), there are small, yet HIGH-IMPACT things we can do to help support our gut and Immune System through our adventures!

Whether you're feeling lost as to how to be best prepared, or even if you already do a few things for yourself in this regard, the following tips are sure to provide you some new and invaluable takeaways!

LEADING UP TO DEPARTURE DAY:

  • Be sure to dedicate time to online research of food vendors in and around the areas in which your accommodations are located, and/or where you anticipate being for meal time (based on any itinerary-planning you've done).
  • Making some restaurant reservations ahead of departure day certainly doesn't hurt! This way, you can shape your day's activities around where you need to be, and when.
  • Pack some snacks as space allows, depending on whether you're checking a bag or using carry-on alone, such as:
    • A high-quality protein powder that can be mixed with a bit of ice and water in your water bottle, to fuel you upon waking or to carry you over between main meals.
    • A bag of raw nuts/seeds.
    • RXBARS
      • Simple ingredient list (egg white = protein base).

DURING PLANE TRAVEL:

  • Wipe down your seat handles, TV, etc. as you get settled - no need to be touching disgusting surfaces right off the bat!
  • Be sure to keep your hands clean, too, and avoid touching your face at all costs!
  • Be sure to get up and walk as often as possible, or at regular, hourly intervals at a minimum.
    • Breaks up periods of sitting.
    • Stretch too, if possible!
      • Movement will help support bowel movements and minimize constipation.

UPON YOUR ARRIVAL & DURING YOUR STAY:

  • At meal time, ensure you have a protein source accounted for, as this goes a LONG WAY in balancing blood sugar levels and stabilizing energy levels/mood for hours at a time...keeping you fuller, for longer!
  • Complement the protein with a few colourful sources of fiber and a source of fat.
  • Keep your breakfasts savoury, not sweet, if possible - makes a big difference in how you feel afterwards!
  • Seek out a local grocery store upon your arrival, even if you're eating meals out. Grabbing some basics for your hotel or Airbnb fridge also goes a long way, such as some fruit, raw veggies (if tolerated), and nitrate-free/oven-roasted sliced meat/poultry, for example!
  • Remember: fiber is what promotes movement through the digestive tract, and the bulking up of stools so they can be passed (along with plenty of hydration). Let's keep those bowels MOVING, and comfortably at that!

UPON ARRIVING HOME:

  • We're in a more vulnerable state post-travel, especially with flying and time zone changes in the picture!
  • Getting back into the swing of your regular nutritional and hydration routine and prioritizing your sleep/wake cycle activity go a long way in supporting your recovery!
  • I like to continue to pump the immune supports (plenty of ideas are shared below!), for the first handful of days upon returning home, so as to bridge the gap in returning to my 'normal'.

*BELOW:

  • I've summarized my favourite gut and immune-supportive natural supplementation items that have proven to be very supportive for me during recent travel overseas, long duration flights and a significant time zone difference.
  • I hope they provide you some new ideas! *Please do your due diligence with ensuring any of these supports that are of interest to you are suitable for your unique health and medical circumstances (through consultation with your nutrition practitioner or primary medical professional.*

ANTI-MICROBIAL, IMMUNE-SUPPORTIVE & ENERGIZING BEE PROPOLIS THROAT SPRAY!

Convenient, DELICIOUS, and autoimmune-friendly!

Bee propolis is a resinous compound produced by honey bees, as the result of mixing of saliva with beeswax and various substances from trees. It's used to seal their hive.

Propolis is a source of B complex vitamins, Vitamin C, iron and natural plant-based compounds, including polyphenols (antioxidant-rich) and flavonoids (antioxidant-rich, antiviral). Propolis is also a natural antimicrobial, helping to keep those 'bad bugs' at a distance!

I enjoy anywhere from 4 sprays daily as general Immune Support, upwards to 8 sprays at a time when feeling a bit more run down or like something is creeping on.

VITAMIN C + BEE PROPOLIS, ROLLED INTO 1!

Also convenient, DELICIOUS, and autoimmune-friendly!

Liposomal Vitamin C is an ideal form of this key antioxidant nutrient, as it's a 'bioavailable'form - easily absorbed by the body into the bloodstream, and gentle on the stomach.

Yes, please!

SINGULAR VITAMIN C!

If you're looking for readily-absorbed Vitamin C on its own, I'd recommend this one - bioclinic naturals Liposomal Vitamin C.

At an ideal 1000mg per soft gel, a convenient way to sneak in a good dose of Vitamin C while on-the-go!

CANPREV ELDERBERRY C!

An alternative form of Vitamin C via a tart, chewable tablet, CanPrev's Elderberry C is a combination of 250mg of Vitamin C and 25 mg of ElderCraft® European black elderberry extract, per tablet.

ON-THE-GO IMMUNE-SUPPORTIVE NUTRIENTS!

By far, these Organika Instant C, D Zinc tablets for your water bottle are my favourite dissolvable tablets on the market!

All 3 of these nutrients are important gut and immune system-regulating nutrients, alongside Vitamin C and Zinc being key antioxidant nutrients in the body!

Each tablet contains:

  • 1000mg Vitamin C
  • 20mg Zinc
  • 1000IUs Vitamin D

I also love that these tablets contain zero sugar!

Drop one in your water bottle, give it a shake and a few minutes to fully dissolve, and you're set!

A health-promoting way to 'jazz up' your daily hydration too, if you need a little something to promote more water intake!

WHERE GUT HEALTH MEETS HYDRATION!

We have been enjoying experimenting with Blume SuperBelly Lemon Ginger, as a way to bring some prebiotic/probiotic support with us in a easily/rapidly-absorbable from through our hydration!

Prebiotic fiber is a food source for the probiotic (beneficial) bacteria of the gut! The prebiotic fiber sourcing here is 'inulin'.

Probiotic bacteria performs countless functions in the body each and every day, whether supporting digestion, the liver, skin, or bulking up stools for elimination of toxins and waste from the body. The probiotic bacterial strain present here is Bacillus coagulans GBI-30 6086.

I also love the Vitamin C-rich ingredients (e.g. lemon, acerola cherry), anti-inflammatory nutrients (e.g. turmeric), and the fact that the bit of stevia, as a non-blood-sugar-spiking natural sweetener, helps offset the pungency of the turmeric. Apple cider vinegar is a great addition, as a support for stimulating your 'digestive juices'.

A fun way to 'jazz up' your hydration and gain some nutritional benefits at the same time!

*If you are sensitive to prebiotic fiber, like 'inulin', or are navigating active SIBO at this time, this product would not be suitable for you.

*If any medications are in the picture, please do your due diligence in determining what is suitable for you.

BEING PREPARED WITH DIGESTIVE SUPPORT SUITABLE TO YOUR, UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES!

Digestion support in the form of natural supplementation needs to be pinpointed to your unique health and medical cirumstances, as these supports need to be handled with care.

*I don't advocate for 'blind natural supplementation', meaning supplementing without knowing what you need, if you need it at all, and if so, which targeted product (and which daily/mealtime dose) is suitable for you.

There are different types of digestive supports, such as (liquid) herb-based digestive bitters, Betaine Hydrochloric Acid (HCl - stomach acid support) and digestive enzymes.

How do you know if you need something and if so, what is right for you?

A practitioner like myself can help determine that with you, as a result of learning and analyzing your personal health, lifestyle and medical journey, including the presence of any current/active symptoms and any medications in the picture.

*Supplementation ingredients, such as herbs and Betaine HCl, DO HAVE contraindications, so please consult with your nutrition practitioner or primary medical professional prior to bringing a new digestive support into the picture.

LEMON TURMERIC GINGER JUICE SHOT (or similar variation)!

We love seeking out this type of juice shot once getting settled in an airport between flights, time-permitting, or upon visiting a local grocery store or juice bar once at our destination. Sometimes we end up stumbling upon a fantastic fresh juice/smoothie bar while out-and-about exploring, too!

A highly anti-inflammatory option, these three ingredients are a powerhouse trio when looking to support your Immune System!

The more potent and spicy, the better! ;)

*Be sure to give these a good shake prior to consuming, and dilute with a bit of water, if needed!

ORGANIC, ALKALIZING, VEGGIE-BASED, GREEN JUICE!

One of the first things we love seeking out in an airport upon landing, time-permitting, is finding a juice/smoothie bar where we can refresh and gently cleanse/detoxify with either a green smoothie or green juice!

Ahhhh!

With juice, we're looking for the use of organic produce, given the nutrients are being concentrated (with the removal of the fiber), into an easily and rapidly-absorbed form. WE don't want to be consuming a richly pesticide-laden beverage.

Furthermore, we look for a green juice that is largely veggie-based (perhaps with the addition of lemon or ginger). A touch of apple or pear can help offset the bitterness of green veggies, but we certainly want fruit in modest amounts, compared to the volume of veggies.

Cheers!
